Spam Control Setup
Our new spam filtering system uses databases on the Internet and other rules to identify spam e-mail messages directly on our mail server, before it reaches you. It's one of the most advanced anti-spam systems on the planet. Furthermore, you can configure the filter system to your own desires. You can set the threshold for spam identification anywhere between very low (catches all spam and a few non-spam e-mails) to very high (no filter at all).
All messages that are suspected of spam will have [POSSIBLE SPAM] appended to the beginning of the e-mail subject. You can even configure the server filter to discard all e-mails that are identified as spam by your rules. However, this isn't recommended because it's possible that some e-mails may be identified as spam that really aren't spam.
Here's how to start:
1. Just go to the spam filter log-in site at:
https://secure.oplnk.net/user_panel/index.php
2. Enter your FULL e-mail address (including "@oplink.net," or "@your_oplink_hosted_domain"), then enter your password, and you'll see the options available to you. The options are explained on the web page.
!! We recommend NEVER disabling the virus filter option. It works very well, and protects you from virus code contained in e-mails.
For starters, set the following options and values:
Scan and delete virus emails - Yes
Enable spam scanning - Yes
Tag subject of spam - Yes
Spam filter aggressiveness - 11
Spam Kill filter aggressiveness - 14
You will want to enter certain "friends" and "enemies" to your filters so that e-mail addresses you are certain you wish to receive mail from (friends) are allowed through the filters no matter how agressive you set the filter levels. The same applies to those e-mail addresses you will always want to block (enemies) no matter how low you set the filter levels. You may wish to modify these addresses from time to time.
You can experiment from there. Please be careful with the Kill filter so you don't forever delete a message incorrectly labeled as spam. if you're curious about some of the threshold filters, there will be spam filter information in the header of each e-mail.
After setting up your personal spam filter, the next thing to do is to set up a rule or a filter in your personal e-mail application to send all newly tagged "POSSIBLE SPAM" e-mails to a special folder. With a special spam folder you can quickly review the messages, then delete them if you wish.
Here's how to do it:
--------------------------------------------
WEB MAIL FILTERING:
In our webmail click on "Folders" (at the top of the window) and create a Folder named: spam. The default "as a subfolder of INBOX" is fine. Then, click on Options; next click on "Message Filters; then click on "New." In the "Match" dialog box select "Subject" from the pull down menu. In the "Contains" dialog box enter: POSSIBLE SPAM. In the "Move to" dialog box, select "INBOX.spam" which is the folder you created earlier.
You can now select that folder in the left panel to review the contents before deleting them.
---------------------------------------------
OUTLOOK EXPRESS FILTERING:
Here's how to set up Outlook Express with a rule to send possible spam to a "spam" folder:
1. In Outlook or Outlook Express, create a new folder (ideally in your 'personal folder or Local Folders') called "spam." Click on "Local Folders" then File-->New-->Folder. Enter "spam" in the dialog box that comes up (w/o the quotes), then click "OK."
2. Click on Tools-->Message Rules--->Mail
3. Click on the "New" button to create a new rule.
4. Under "Select the Conditions for your rule," check the box labeled "Where the Subject line contains specific words"
5. Under "Select the Actions for your rule," check the box labeled "Move it to the specified folder."
6. Under "Rule Description...," click on the text :"contains specific words"
7. In the dialog box that comes up asking for the specific words, type: POSSIBLE SPAM Then click "Add," then "OK."
8. Also under "Rule Description...," click on the text :"specified"
9. In the dialog box that comes up select the "spam" folder that you previously created.
10. If you've completed all the steps, a dialog box labeled "Message Rules" will appear and the new Mail Rule will be highlighted. A description of how the rule works will be present. If you're satisfied with the filter rule, then click "OK"
That's it! The rule will start sending all messages that are appended with "POSSIBLE SPAM" in the label to the new spam folder. You can now review the contents of this folder before deleting any of them.
Mouse clicking in the window containing the list of "spam" e-mails will activate the mail box and you can Edit-->Select All, then Edit-->Delete to get rid of all of the e-mails at once.
